Ukrainian water polo is gaining momentum: Oleksandr Svishchov about champions, youth and big ambitions
The final round of the Ukrainian Super League men’s water polo championship has ended in Lviv, and it has become not only the sporting event of the year but also an important international signal of the resilience and development of Ukrainian sport during the war. The visit of the European Aquatics management added special significance to the tournament, and the main outcome of the season was confirmation of the effectiveness of the Ukrainian water polo development strategy, which is consistently implemented by the President of the Ukrainian Water Polo Federation Oleksandr Svishchov.
International support for Ukraine
The final matches of the Super League were attended by European Aquatics President Antonio Jose Silva and European Aquatics Vice President Erkan Yalcin. During the visit, the European sports officials familiarized themselves with the conditions of the competition in Ukraine and the consequences of Russian aggression for the sports infrastructure.
Oleksandr Svishchov noted that the visit of the European Federation was an important step in conveying Ukraine’s position on preventing Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions.
“I am very glad that representatives of European Aquatics came to us and saw the conditions in which water polo players train and compete. We conveyed to them our position on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international competitions. I hope they will support us,” emphasized the President of the Ukrainian Water Polo Federation.
In his turn, Antonio Jose Silva noted the courage of the Ukrainian sports community and declared the readiness of the international federation to help restore sports infrastructure and develop water sports in Ukraine.
“Dynamo Lviv confirmed its championship status
At the end of the season, the undisputed leader of Ukrainian water polo was once again Water polo club Dynamo Lviv, which won the 13th championship title in the club’s history and the eighth in a row. The NTU “KhPI” team – SHVSM – won silver medals, and the Lviv College of Sports water polo team – Aquatico – became bronze medalists.
Oleksiy Shvedov, head coach of Dynamo Lviv, emphasized that the secret of success lies in the club’s established championship culture and systematic work with players.
At the same time, representatives of the Kharkiv team emphasized the importance of preserving water polo traditions and attracting young people to sports even in wartime.
Development strategy yields results
After the championship, Oleksandr Svishchov paid special attention to the future of Ukrainian water polo. According to him, the main task of the Federation is to preserve human resources, support young athletes and expand the competitive domestic championship.
It is thanks to the systematic work of the Ukrainian Water Polo Federation that today it is possible not only to hold national competitions at a high level, but also to ensure the development of water polo schools in Lviv, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Odesa and Dnipro.
The results of the Super League season demonstrate that Ukrainian water polo is confidently moving forward. Rejuvenated teams, new talent, and the preservation of sporting traditions create the foundation for future international success.
Oleksandr Svishchov summarized that the main goal today is not just to maintain the current level, but to create conditions under which Ukrainian water polo players will be able to compete on equal terms with the world elite. That is why the development of children’s and youth sports, support of clubs and active international cooperation remain the key priorities of the Federation.
