Yuriy Sydorovich turns 60: “From the junior championship to the coaching bridge”
Congratulations on the anniversary of one of the most outstanding defenders of Ukrainian water polo and the famous coach Yuriy Omelyanovich Sydorovich!
Yuriy Omelyanovych is a legend of Dynamo Lviv, with which he started playing in 1980 and became one of the record players who played the most matches for the team.
Yuriy Sydorovich’s achievements include the first-ever water polo gold medal at the Junior World Championship in 1981, where he scored the ‘golden’ goal in the final against the Italians, the ‘bronze’ of the Youth Euro-1982, as well as the ‘bronze’ of the USSR championships in 1989 and 1991 and ‘gold’ of the championship of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian proved himself as a player in foreign clubs, becoming the champion and winner of the Polish Cup, silver medalist and winner of the Malta Cup, and also played for the Slovakian team.
Since 2018 Yuriy Omelyanovych has also been helping Oleksiy Shvedov on the coaching staff of his beloved Dynamo Lviv.
Even after the end of his playing career, Yuriy Sydorovich did not leave water polo and continued to work in the coaching industry. He was the coach of the national water polo team of Ukraine at different periods of time and worked with numerous clubs of Ukrainian and foreign leagues.
Thanks to his great diligence, professional approach and talent, Yuriy Sydorovych gained great authority in the world of water polo. He made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian water polo and raised it to a new level.
As a coach, Yuriy Sydorovych began his career at Dynamo, helping Ihor Zinkevich as a playing coach. Since 2002 he continued his career at the Lviv School of Physical Culture, which is now the Lviv Professional College of Sports, where he keeps working to this day.
