The Ukrainians overcame the “invincible” Hungarians
Yesterday, the Ukrainian water polo team defeated strong opponents from the Hungarian University of Debrecen with a score of 15-16, thereby opening the way to the finals. This team was considered practically invincible but the Ukrainians dispelled this myth. I hope that tonight, during the final game, our national team will be able to overcome another “invincible” Hungarian opponent – water polo players from the Budapest Business School.
Yesterday’s victory was truly incredible, although it was not easy for us. Spectators witnessed a really intense game. At the semi-final stage, the stakes are very high, so we were ready for the opponents to show strong water polo, which is their “brand” style. As a result of the tough game of the opponents, some of our boys received serious injuries – for example, Maksym Osyka, according to the results of a preliminary examination, had broken ribs. I wish our guys to recover quickly and join the ranks!
No. 8 of the Hungarian team – Patrick Mashi, who scored 8 goals out of 15 – “spoiled” our athletes a little. But our players managed to turn the tide of the game – Maksym Osyka, Dmytro Aleseev, and, especially, Dmytro Ashanin, who scored the winning goal, showed themselves. It is interesting that Achanin plays in the Hungarian championship, so this match was especially important for him. The victory was absolutely deserved but our players made the audience nervous. During the match, for a long time our athletes were losing the 2nd ball. And only thanks to perseverance and stubbornness plus a little sports fortune, which comes to strong-willed and true athletes, our boys managed to break through.
I think we really surprised the Debrecen team. After all, Hungarian water polo players are not used to losing at all, and even more so to Ukrainians, whom they considered far too weak opponents. Hopefully, tonight we will show the Hungarian players again what our water polo players are worth.
Undoubtedly, another test awaits our national team today: the final match with the water polo players of the Business School of Budapest. By the way, this is the only team to which the Ukrainians conceded in this tournament. Therefore, our boys will try to take revenge, and, I believe, today we will uncork the champagne for their victory!
